ToggleIf you own or rent a home with a yard or other outdoor space, you understand the constant battle that is weed control. For many people of all ages, there are few home and garden chores more disliked than having to weed landscaping or flower beds, and you may be tempted to simply throw up your hands and declare you don’t care what your yard looks like. However, controlling weed growth is much more important than mere aesthetics. Weeds crowd out desired plants and use up resources such as water and soil nutrients. Many weeds are aggressive or invasive plants whose unchecked growth can negatively impact the local ecosystem. Weeds can sprout up through cracks in pavement, damaging sidewalks, streets, and even buildings.
So how can you control and prevent weeds from growing in your landscaping while also avoiding having to pull them manually? The answer is a pre-emergent herbicide applied to your lawn.
In this guide, you’ll learn what Resolute Pre-Emergent is, how it works, the benefits of using this or similar products, how to apply it, and how to calculate the amount to use.
What is Resolute Pre-Emergent?
Resolute Pre-Emergent is, as the name suggests, a pre-emergent herbicide that is prodiamine-based. This type of weed control works by penetrating into the soil and affecting weeds on a seed level. Prodiamine works to prevent seeds from germinating so the seeds never grow into full plants that breach the surface of the soil.
Resolute Pre-Emergent is a broad-spectrum herbicide, affecting many common weeds such as:
- Crabgrass
- Bluegrass
- Foxtails
- Henbit
- Chickweed
Pre-emergent herbicides don’t affect plants that have already sprouted as these products aren’t absorbed through leaves or roots.
The Benefits of Prodiamine-Based Herbicides
The main benefit of using a pre-emergent herbicide is that it prevents weeds from ever seeing the light of day. This means fewer weeds that need pulling throughout the summer. It has several other advtages over other forms of weed control:
- It’s safe for most turf grasses and ornamental plants.
- It affects more than 30 grasses and broadleaf weeds.
- You can wait several months between applications.
- It’s safe to use around pets and children.
Calculating How Much You Need
How much herbicide you need is determined by the size of your yard. Calculate how much you need by measuring the length and width of your yard and multiply the two numbers together to get the square footage. Most applications use 0.4 ounces of herbicide and 0.5 gallons of water per 1000 square feet. However, some situations require a slightly different ration so check the label before getting started.
Using Resolute Pre-Emergent to Control Weeds
Prodiamine-based herbicides such as Resolute Pre-Emergent are simple and easy to use. All you need is a sprayer and something to stir with. Pour 50% of the required water in the sprayer tank. Add the herbicide and top off with the rest of the water. Stir or agitate the tank until the granules are fully dissolved. Spray the solution in the treatment area until the soil is wet but not saturated. Irrigate your yard with a half inch of water.
Resolute Pre-Emergent is a safe, easy, and effective way to prevent weeds from growing in your yard. Apply every few months, starting in early March, and you’ll be able to enjoy a weed-free yard all summer long without that dreaded manual weeding.
