ToggleAre you looking to make your home more energy-efficient so you can lower your power bills and reduce your environmental footprint? Aside from insulating your home, you may also keep your air conditioning and heating system in good condition to achieve this goal.
Keeping Your Home Energy-Efficient
- Insulate Your Home
The first thing that you have to do is to install or upgrade the ceiling, wall, and floor insulation. You may also use draft stoppers on doors and windows in order to seal possible leaks.
- Use Efficient Heating and Cooling
You also have to maintain and use energy-efficient systems like heat pumps or inverter air conditioners. Set your thermostat to 18–20°C in winter and 24–26°C in summer to stay comfortable and save energy. If possible, close off unused rooms when heating or cooling.
- Natural Light and Ventilation
During summer days, open the curtains to let natural light brighten your room. At night, you can reduce the heat by ventilating your room as you open your windows.
- Turn off Standby Power
When you don’t use appliances or electronics at the wall, you have to unplug or switch them off. If possible, use smart power boards in order to cut off standby draw.
Taking Care of Air Conditioning Units
If you want to keep your AC in good condition at home, you may need regular AC maintenance and use it only if necessary.
- Clean or Replace Filters
Your air conditioning unit has an air filter that you have to clean every 1 to 3 months. For frequent usage, you may clean whenever necessary. Note that dirty filters can reduce the efficiency and strain the system in the long run.
- Clean the Outdoor Unit
You may also clean away leaves, dirt, and debris. Do this by gently hosing down the condenser coil. But do it only when the power is off.
- Schedule Annual Servicing
Get a professional technician to service the AC at least once a year. An air conditioning service will check the refrigerant levels, clean internal coils, and inspect for faults.
Keeping Heat Pumps in Top Shape
- Clean or Replace Filters
Dust and pet hair often get stuck in the filter. Thus, you have to clean it regularly every 1 to 3 months. This will help increase its efficiency and avoid straining the heat pump.
- Avoid Switching Modes Too Quickly
If you have to change from heating to cooling or vice versa, you have to wait a few minutes before switching back. This ensures the compressor remains in good condition.
- Annual Professional Service
Hiring a heat pump service technician can help clean the coils, check the refrigerant, and test the performance of your heat pump. This should be done before winter or summer to catch issues early.
