CeeLo Green is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, and actor, best known for working with the hip-hop group Goodie Mob. CeeLo released three albums with the group before he started pursuing a solo journey in 2002.
Despite having been famous in Goodie Mob, his solo career stagnated for a few years, taking off four years later, while singing with the group Gnarls Barkley. The new group’s debut single became an instant hit, enabling Green to rise to international fame.
After the debut single was a success, the group released their debut album, St. Elsewhere and it performed well, reaching #4 on the US Billboard 200.
Early Life
CeeLo Green was born on May 30, 1974, in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was an ordained minister in church, but sadly he died when Green was only 2 years old. As a result of the sudden demise, the singer adopted his mother’s surname and began singing in the church choir.
CeeLo’s mother was a firefighter and a minister, and she ensured good health and education for her son. The singer joined Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville Georgia. When CeeLo was only 16 years old, his mother was involved in a car accident that paralyzed her leading to her death.
Career
CeeLo’s career began officially after he formed the group Big Gipp in 1991. The group was beginning to find success when CeeLo experienced the death of his mother. The incident affected him greatly, and he expressed his depression through various songs like Just a Thought and Free by Goodie Mob.
Goodie Mob released its debut album in 1995 and it did so well. It went Gold and reached #8 on the Billboard. After the huge success, the group released two other albums and they were certified Gold.
The singer left Goodie Mob and signed a deal with Arista Records. Despite dedicating himself, two albums had very low sales which led to the label dropping him. After the star was dropped, he formed Gnarls Barkley with DJ Danger Mouse and the duo released the album “St. Elsewhere” in 2006.
Their second album was released in 2008 and their single Crazy went viral, appearing on Rolling Stone magazine as the best song of the decade. The duo released another single “Fuck You” in August 2010 and it received over 2 million views in less than a week.
The single did so well and received five Grammy nominations. Since then, Green has been releasing numerous albums, making him one of the best singers.
Apart from finding success as a singer, Green has also appeared in a few films, enabling him to make a name for himself.
